The American Legion’s 2024 Annual National High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, Department of Georgia, Area 4, contest was held at our Post 304 on Saturday, February 17th. The Department of Georgia Area 4 is represented by the 4th, 5th, and 7th Districts. The two competitors gave excellent speeches that kept the audience riveted on their oration and that was followed by a second round of speeches about the XXV Amendment, Section 3.
The winner was Andrew Fleming, representing Post 40, District 4. Second place went to Gwyneth Ferguson, representing Post 140, District 5. The Judges of the Contest were Pam Younker, with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; Roy Lantz, Professional Speaker and Author; and Jennifer Cross, with CocaCola.
The winners received the Patrick Henry Oratorical Medal, and a cash prize for each place. The winner moves on to the Department/State Competition, March 3rd in Forsyth GA, and the winner of that will represent Georgia at the National Contest at Hillsdale College in Michigan.
The winner, Andrew Fleming, has gone on to Nationals in the previous two years! Afterwards the audience, competitors, their families and Post volunteers enjoyed refreshments provided by the Post 304 Auxiliary.
