On Friday, June 7th, members of the American Legion Riders and Patriot Guard Riders were invited to participate in a heartwarming mission at our local airport. Here’s the story.
Kaycee Yarbrough saw a Facebook post from an elderly gentleman by the name of Boyd Hagaman, lamenting the fact that it didn’t look like he would ever get to fly again. Mr. Hagaman was about to celebrate his 90th Birthday and he believed he had finally reached a point that piloting a plane was no longer possible.
Kaycee contacted a member of the American Legion Riders in Acworth, who happened to know someone that owned his own airplane. A chain reaction began to form. A Pilot and a plane was secured, Veterans from in and around the airport contributed funds to pay for the expenses of the flight, Cobb County Motor Officers caught wind of the pending operation and they quickly volunteered their services to escort Mr. Hagaman from the airport back to the Ron Asby North Cobb American Legion Post 304 following the flight.
The American Legion Post offered a post flight meal for all participants following the flight. Cobb County Fire jumped in on the action by volunteering trucks and crew which ultimately created a beautiful water bridge for Mr Hagaman’s aircraft to pass under upon completion of his flight.
Danny Townsend offered up his vintage Korean War Jeep with a 50 Caliber Machinegun to transport Mr. Hagaman to the American Legion Post.
Of special note, Mr. Hagaman served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea during the Korean War. The staff of Atlanta Air Charter & McCullum Field were on hand to help all those in attendance.
Once again Mr. Hagaman, you “Danced The Skies On Laughter and Silver Wings…”
