The Ron Asby North Cobb American Legion Post 304 held it’s annual BBQ dinner on Saturday, November 17th. Diners had the option to choose pulled pork or a quarter chicken, along with baked beans, coleslaw and peach cobbler. Additionally, many diners also enjoyed mac & cheese and “secret recipe” deviled eggs provided by Kaycee Yarbrough.
Members started smoking the pork butts on Thursday, braving the cold and rain for twelve or more hours to get the work done. Big “thank you’s” are extended to members Dave Sibley, Bob Hughes, Danny Townsend, David Brennan, Roy Holder, Jack Kimmich, Cecil Keith, George Tymchyshyn and Stephen Quaile. The guys then showed up early Saturday morning to take care of the chicken. Additional thanks to Greg Vassilious who managed the ticket table throughout the day on Saturday, Jim Smith who worked tirelessly to keep everything organized, along with Bill Zelley and Henry Alexander, without whom the Post would likely stop dead in the water, and Woody Rhody who was on hand to manage finances for the day.
And, as always, special thanks to Chuck Volk for getting those Queen of Hearts tickets sold.
The Ladies Auxiliary, along with members of the Boy Scouts, worked the dining rooms dishing up the plates of food, cleaning tables and keeping everything running smoothly. Thanks to Lynda Asby, Mary Zelley, Vivian Gulledge, Pennie Groover, Lois Fitzgerald, Beth Holder, Mary Pat Hughes, Diane Kornacki, Karen Lekan, Tina Hutton, Nancy Melcher, and Jim Smith’s daughter. Also, Dave Sibley’s daughter & son-in-law, April & Bruce Brogdon helped with clean up. Thank you to all. and the others who gave their time to make the dinner a success.

The annual BBQ dinner is one of the Post’s largest fund raisers, bringing in much-needed money for programs like the PTSD dog service for vets with PTSD, Boys & girls State, JROTC and ROTC programs, Oratorical, high school scholarship awards, veteran’s emergency contingency funds and more. We would like to thank all who participated and supported the post through your donations, and look forward to serving you some great food again next year.
