Chris Evans (“Captain America,” “The Gray Man,” “Knives Out”) and Ana de Armas (“No Time to Die,” “The Gray Man,” “Knives Out,” and the upcoming John Wick spinoff “Ballerina”) team for a third time in the Apple TV+ thriller “Ghosted,” a movie about how hard it is for spies to maintain that all-important work/life balance.
Apple has released the first trailer for the movie, which is set to stream on the platform on April 21, 2023. Let’s go to the videotape.
Cole (Evans) is a normal guy who goes out on a single date with Sadie (de Armas), a woman who rocks his world. He falls head over heels and freaks out when she won’t answer his texts. Impulsively, he jets off to London to find out why she ghosted him.
Cole gets himself kidnapped by some international bad guys, because it turns out that Sadie is a CIA agent on a mission. The two of them then have to hammer out their relationship issues while she completes her latest mission.
“Ghosted” was directed by Dexter Fletcher, the former actor who directed “Rocket Man” and will helm the upcoming “Sherlock Holmes 3” with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. The screenplay was written by Chris McKenna, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. McKenna wrote the last three Spider-Man movies, while Reese and Wernick wrote the “Deadpool” and “Zombieland” movies.
Cole tells the bad guys that he’s just a farmer on a date, and he seems quite clumsy as he and Sadie make their escapes. By the end of the trailer, he’s fully operational. Is Cole a fast learner? Maybe he’s a spec ops veteran whose training comes back to him as he reenters the fight. Or perhaps he’s actually a tactical asset who’s just pretending to be a farmer.
Who can say? That’s the fun of spy movies and most of the reason why actors are so excited to star in movies where they get to simulate spec ops skills. That seems to be especially true for de Armas, who’s carving out a career as a 5-foot-6 action star.
