EDITORIAL OPINION
by Dan Harr
Volunteers are a very important part of our Post’s operations and the continuing ability to do some of the events where we make money.
This weekend, a very small group of volunteers had to work up to 15 hours on Sunday, and then again more time the next day, to help bring in much needed funds for the Post.
The question is – WHERE WERE YOU? If you are older, handicapped or have other medical issues that prevent you from working, then you are excused. But if you are capable of doing things like golfing, fishing, bowling, hiking, working at a regular job and more, then you are capable of being a volunteer for an event.
No, your excuse of “but I had family commitments” doesn’t count. Do you think those of use who DID volunteer wouldn’t have rather spent the day with family or friends? If we’d had more volunteers to help out and fill in on shifts, then everyone would be able to spend time with their family for the holiday. But that wasn’t the case. So, those few of us who did volunteer carried the load while others went out to have fun.
When events are being organized, one of the first things people say is “good luck getting volunteers”. They are right. That needs to change for the Post to be able to continue growing and making money.
Next time someone says “Hey, we need volunteers for…”, please don’t be afraid to raise YOUR hand and step up.
Like the old poster says, “I WANT YOU!”
