We all have the opportunity to save the life of one Veteran. What is the goal of the American Legion “Be the One” program?
First it is to destigmatize asking for mental health support. Then to provide peer-to-peer support and resources and educate everyone on how the can “Be the One”.
- We should be able to talk with fellow Veterans about how we feel.
- We should ask for help when we need it.
- Offer help when needed – To reach out when a Veteran is struggling
- Listen when a veteran needs to talk
- Remember family and friends do care.
- We need to ask the Veterans in our lives how they are doing
As part of The American Legion “Be the One” mission to end veteran suicide, The Legion has worked with Columbia University to develop training for those who want to learn more about interacting and responding with veterans who may be in crisis.
After the training, participants will be able to:
- Use the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale to determine at-risk individuals.
- Identify risk factors and warning signs
- Outline the types of suicidal thought process and four behaviors that indicate imminent risk.
- Communicate effectively with an individual who may be at risk.
I am asking members of our American Legion Family to join me in creating the Post 304 “Be the One” Task Force. I call you back to those lines from our preamble ….” to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.”
Will You join our Taskforce? Will You Be The One?
Please reach out to me by CLICKING HERE if you are willing to participate in the program.
